Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Poland!!!

In Polish schools we celebrate Christmas on the last day at school before Christmas. This year it was on 22nd December. We gather in the gym and listen to Christmas carols, in the classrooms we have Christmas Eve dinner with many traditions: holy wafer, some traditional dishes with fish and poppy seed and ginger bread. Additionally with some fruit. And of course we sing carol then.

Unfortunately we couldn't take part in the videoconference, but we sang Christmas wishes for you and a Christmas carol in Polish.

The Christmas market in Piazza Navona in Rome

The letters to Santa Claus

Termini Station, on Christmas trees set up in the big railway station in the capital, hundreds of tickets to ask for a gift to Santa Claus. A cross section of our country in a difficult economic and social development. Someone asks for a job, a love someone, smaller gifts, the greatest peace and serenity. The non-EU exchange greetings and thoughts in their own language and someone asks Santa Claus a ticket to return home from their loved ones. And this is Christmas.

6th December - Santa Claus's Day in Poland

On 6th December in Poland we celebrate Santa Claus's Day and on that day Santa comes to children with lots of presents. In schools it looks different: children make presenta to each other, sometimes parents buy and make percels to the whole class, sometimes childen go on trips. At our school the tradition is sports competition: students in each year take part in races - we haven't got lessons on that day. Santa brings sweets. All have fun!!!
Do you have the same festival in your countries?

My name is Bojka Ristova, I'm twelve and I am Macedonian.
Three years ago I came to Italy to spend some 'time with my mom. I loved my new home, especially my new country "Italy". I thought that by staying here my life would change. So I stayed in Italy, Rionero inVulture. I enrolled in this school. The manager and the teachers welcomed me very well. I was a bit sad at the begin, because I missed my friends and because I did not know the language, but because my new classmates were younger than me a year and a half. Day after day I used to be with peers than with teachers. The rioneresi, the teachers, companions, friends made me feel one of them. I want to thank my mom, but most of the teachers who love me and made me learn so many beautiful things. I wish one day I should obtain Italian citizenship to feel that in all respects and at all times to help foreigners who feel disoriented as I felt myself.

From olive to oil

The Vulture area in which we live, is typical for the production of olive oil Denomination of Protected Origin. Its color  is yellow with green highlights, its taste sweet . We use olive oil as a base for many dishes from the kitchen, for bruschetta with tomato, salad dressings and vegetables in general. Driven by curiosity, along with teachers, we decided to see how olive oil is produced. We are so gone before in an olive grove to pick olives, then to the mill to observe the process of transformation from the olive to oil. We realized that to get a good oil should be pointed out some very important steps and comply with the hygiene and cleanliness. For the pressing of olives and oil extraction are allowed only mechanical and physical processes, it is forbidden to use products to chemical action.

In Lisbon, the nights begin with Fado.

An accompaniment to the city’s history, Fado grew out of the old quarters of Mouraria, Alfama, Bairro Alto and Madragoa.
Amália was the most charismatic of these early Fado singers and the first to take the music overseas. Possessing a great stage presence and being a natural entertainer, Amália left us with the classical image of the traditional Fado singer in a black dress and shawl. Her former residence is now a museum that is well worth a visit.

Fado, Humanity Heritage

A shawl, a guitar, a voice and heartfelt emotion. These are the ingredients of Fado.
Nowadays, Fado is almost a symbol of Portugal, a celebrated form of world music that has retained its traditional qualities but moved with the times. Amália, the world-renowned singer who brought Fado to the great concert halls of Europe and the attention of international audiences, has found a worthy successor in Mariza, who continues to tour overseas, taking the Fado to an even wider audience.

TRYING TO USE TALK BOX TO MAKE A VIDEOCONFENRENCE

On the 1st of December, María Teresa and María Jesús, the founders partners of the project Children and Reporters, tried  talk box to make a videoconference to improve the communication between partners and schools because all the partners want to have a videoconference before Christmas Eve.
The meeting started at a quarter past eleven and finished at a quarter to twelve.
Maria Teresa, from Italy, was in class with her students and María Jesús, from Spain, was in 6th class with her students too. All they were very happy and children took some photos to remember this fantastic and funny moment, and to write this new, of course.

After the videoconference we, the spanish students found some problems:
  • We must open the door to have a better conexion to internet because internet conexion in our class is very bad. We could listen to María Teresa, but we couldn't see her and her pupils very well.
In a few days we will have another videoconference with all the partners. The topics will be:
  1. Welcome and greetings.
  2. Tradictional Christmas Carols from all the countries. (Each country will sing a Traditional Christmas carol in his/her country)
  3. We sing together the Carol "We wish you a Merry Christmas".
  4. Any other bussines.
You can try talk box in our videoconference room, here on the left of the page, on this magazine, and be ready to talk and sing on the day of the videoconference. It is coming soon.

Christmas in Denmark

Christmas in Denmark

The Italian students meet their Spanish comrades

The Italian students were really excited to see and greet their fellow Spaniards. These are some pictures taken during the meeting.

How we celebrate Christmas in Denmark

In the middle of Oct.,all shops begin decorating their windows with Christmas lights and other decorations. They sell Christmas decorations already in Oct.

Last day before our Christmas holidays 20th Dec all students and the teachers at the school go church,- the doom which is situated in the middle of our city. Each class is ”called out” and all are lined up for giving a big candle to light up the dark on the 600 metres path to the doom. Our students walk 2 and 2 and the younger student goes with a senior student who has the big candle.
The many candles is a wonderful sight in the dark at 8.30 in the morning. Lots of parents join us to church and we have had this tradition for many years by now. I must say,we haven´t had any accidents with all the many big candles, so far.

Last day before our Christmas holidays. Our school tradition.

Here some elder students are given the candle light by a teacher.

In the doom, our students sing special Christmas songs and our music teachers sing and play as well. This is so fantastic to hear

and ALL students are so excited about this and they all sit very quietly in the big doom, which is totally full this day. Did I remember to tell only our school have booked this doom this day?
Students, teachers, parents fill up the many 600 seats in this doom such a day.

Waiting for Christmas Eve 24th, we´re playing in the snow.

Here is a traditional Christmas tree. Some put candle lights on the tree but due to dogs and small children, many use electric lights on the tree. The gifts are put under the tree in in the morning 24th Dec.

                                  A traditional Danish Christmas tree.

Christmas Eve 24th many people go to church at about 4 pm. When they come home, they make the last preparations for the dinner and then we´ll have the traditional Christmas dinner; duck or goose, potatoes, sweet potatoes, chips, and for dessert a kind of a rice pudding; rice porridge with almonds and whipped cream. Her we have to find the almond which is not cut into pieces. The one who gets this special almond gets a small present.
After the dessert, we sing Christmas song while walking around the Christmas tree. Then it´s time for the presents. The clock is often around 8.30 pm. We take one present at the time. Some families with smaller children often end up in paper in the whole living room, but the older you get, the smaller the presents are and the less paper we have. The children play with their presents.

After this we get a cup of tea or coffe and some Christmas candy and then relax. Othen the time is 10.30pm and we are all very tired and go to bed. Yearly the next morning, children are up early to play with their presents and at noon we invite family for a big lunch or we are invited out. The day after the same programme and we´re all full and have put on weight after 3 days of eating.
We spend our holiday by playing in the snow and reading books in front of the fire.

This is our traditional Danish Christmas dinner:

The typical Danish deseert at Cristmas Eve:

A kind of rice pudding with whipped cream, almonds and cherry sauce. (We usually have more bowls with this dessert, but not to get so full before we get the almond, we´ll have a small bowl to eat first....)

                                 Homemade Christmas sweets:

May you all have a Merry Christmas
 and a happy New Year!

 Kindly regards,
       Giersings Realskole, Denmark
