October 17th is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

"We want a better World"

October 17th is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, as it has been observed since 1993. At the Millennium Summit, world leaders committed themselves to cutting by half by the year 2015 the number of people living in extreme poverty — people whose income is less than one dollar a day. The theme of 2011 is "From Poverty to Sustainability: People at the Centre of Inclusive Development":
“People living in poverty face increasingly difficult challenges as climate change, environmental degradation and rising food prices threaten their livelihoods and survival. The path to sustainable development must ensure that people living in poverty are included in decision-making processes, and that concrete action is taken to respond to their needs and demands.”
At EB nº 2 da Lousã and in other schools that belong to our group of schools, at the same time lessons stopped, so that students could listen to this year’s global message. The students joined together and they had also the opportunity to express their own ideas and feelings on this subject. The students were also asked to dress in white and to bring a pack of milk to be given to the ones in need.

"Together, let us listen to people — and stand up for their hopes and aspirations. That is how we will build a world free of poverty."
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

OCEANIC POSIDONIA FOUND IN FORMENTERA, THE LARGEST LIVING BEING

It is an underwater macroplant  with several extensions that come from the same seed. It was found in Formentera and has over a hundred thousand years old.

A scientific study has determined the existence in Formentera, Spain, the living being that could be the largest in the world, a Posidonia oceanica eight kilometers long, the various plants from the same seed and same genetic individual.

This is a study by Carlos Duarte, the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Study, Sophie Arnaud, University of Algarve, and Deudero Health, University of the Balearic Islands (UIB).

The discovery was made under the project "Conservation of seagrass meadows." Researchers say that grasslands are disappearing at a rate of one to two percent per year. What are seagrasses? They grow up to forty feet deep at sea and are characterized by the longest living plants on the planet, so some have more than one hundred thousand years old, an aspect that makes it difficult to regenerate because it requires time to grow.
